Under the direction of the Principal Safety Engineer (Pressure Vessels) with the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Pressure Vessel Unit, the Senior Safety Engineer (Pressure Vessels) has full supervisory and oversight responsibility for a Pressure Vessel office and works without detailed supervision or review. The Senior Safety Engineer (Pressure Vessels) supervises, plans, schedules, directs, assigns, evaluates, and reviews the work of a multi-disciplinary staff composed of office support staff (e.g., Office Technicians, Staff Services Analysts, Management Services Technicians) and Associate Safety Engineers (Pressure Vessels) engaged in the administration and implementation of the Cal/OSHA Pressure Vessel program. The Senior Safety Engineer (Pressure Vessels) is responsible for the training, upward mobility, and maintaining discipline of employees under their supervision. The Senior Safety Engineer (Pressure Vessels) ensures that the office functions and operates daily in accordance with DIR-DOSH directives, rules, policies and procedures and that staff members promote DIR-DOSH Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals. The Senior Safety Engineer (Pressure Vessels) conducts complex studies and analyses; initiates investigations into accidents and complaints related to pressure vessels; reviews and makes recommendations on reports of the seriousness of violations found. The Senior Safety Engineer (Pressure Vessels) coordinates with Division staff in development of state standards; and conducts committee meetings to revise or propose new safety orders. The Senior Safety Engineer (Pressure Vessels) develops programs for promotion of safety concepts; consults with labor, management, and public groups on the more complex and sensitive pressure-vessel safety engineering problems and plans and implements seminars for industry and in-service training of staff. May participate as technical advisor to the Standards Board during public hearings.
Will also consider Temporary Authorization Utilization (TAU) appointments - Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications for the classification but do not currently have eligibility on an employment certification list by having taken and passed an examination may apply as a TAU. TAU appointments are limited to a duration of 9 months within a 12 consecutive month period. In order for a TAU appointment to become permanent, individuals must take and pass the related examination, and thereby become eligible from a certification list, within 9 months of TAU appointment. Individuals who successfully obtain eligibility prior to the expiration of the TAU appointment will not be required to re-compete in a competitive process for permanent appointment to that position.

National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors “IS” In-Service Commission and “AI” Authorized Inspector Commission. “R” and “B” Endorsements.
Willingness to: undertake additional training as needs are identified; travel out of state to obtain job required training and certifications; Keenness of observation, tact, and maturity.
Must be available to work the hours the Division and/or Department determines are necessary to meet its business needs including weekends and/or nights as needed. The Senior Safety Engineer (Pressure Vessels) is required to perform both office and field work, including traveling (driving for extended periods of time, commercial flights, etc.) within the State for the purposes of conducting reviews, attending training and meetings, with occasional overnight travel and out-of-state travel.
Ability to communicate professionally and effectively both verbally and in writing Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word. Maintain a valid California Driver’s license and proof of insurance.
