The venous access nurse's responsibilities include vein assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population. The venous access nurse provides patient and family education and psychosocial and emotional support. They are a member of a multidisciplinary care team that requires effective communication and collaboration with co-workers and staff at the Institute, BWH, and other collaborating institutions and agencies. The venous access nurse identifies their own professional goals and learning needs. The role requires IV clinical expertise, ability to assess veins and make recommendations to providers for other access devices based on the vein assessment, critical thinking, collaborative practice as a venous access nurse within a cancer center, line care maintenance and troubleshooting, knowledge of vein preservation principles and techniques, excellent communication skills and an understanding of the principles and practices of clinical research.
