Your Role as the Education Reporter:
As the Education Reporter, you will focus on people-centered journalism, telling the important stories that highlight both the joys and challenges faced by students, teachers, and lifelong learners. With a deep curiosity about how education shapes our lives, you will report on the local community's experiences with schools, policies, and teaching methods, always with an equity-driven approach.
You'll dig deep into topics like:
Accountability: Are our schools effectively supporting students in critical areas such as reading, math, and social-emotional skills?
Readiness for Life: How are schools preparing students for the future, ensuring they have the critical thinking skills needed in today's information-heavy world?
Mental, Social, and Emotional Wellbeing: What are schools doing to support students, families, and teachers in these critical areas?
You'll report on educational topics in a variety of formats, from short news spots to in-depth multimedia features, and you'll collaborate with the rest of our reporting team to bring stories that matter to our diverse audiences.
Key Responsibilities:
News Reporting and Producing (80%)
Create engaging and informative news content across platforms: radio, TV, web, and social media
Research, write, and produce stories for broadcast and digital formats, collaborating with producers, photographers, and videographers
Adhere to the editorial guidelines and direction provided by the News Editor
Planning and Story Development (15%)
Stay up-to-date with developments in education, maintaining key contacts and collaborating with colleagues to brainstorm compelling story ideas
Build and cultivate your education reporting beat to provide insightful coverage of key issues
Other Duties (5%)
Step in for other newsroom positions when needed, such as anchoring newscasts or producing web content
Participate in station events, including on-air fundraising and community outreach
Represent the station at public events and contribute to ongoing projects and tasks as needed
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field (or equivalent experience)
At least two years of experience in a reporting role
Skills and Abilities:
Strong news judgment and understanding of journalistic ethics
Ability to write compelling stories for both broadcast and digital platforms
Audio and video editing skills, with a willingness to learn if needed
Experience in or willingness to do live shots, both for radio and TV
Familiarity with AP style and broadcast standards
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build professional relationships within the community
Ability to work on tight deadlines and handle multiple stories simultaneously
Reliable transportation, valid driver's license, and proof of insurance
Preferred Skills:
Previous experience reporting on education
Fluency in a second language, such as Spanish or Tagalog
Data analysis skills and experience using engagement tools to connect with audiences
Public media experience in radio or television production
Additional Information:
Candidates must reside in California or be willing to relocate and live within a commutable distance to the campus by the time of hire.
