Job Description

The Archdiocese of St. Louis strives to teach and share our faith, serve others, and foster unity throughout the St. Louis area. Once a part of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary's campus, the Cardinal Rigali Center in Shrewsbury, MO is today the headquarters and curia (governing body) for the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Job Summary

The Director of Athletics at Cardinal Ritter is responsible for providing visionary leadership, strategic planning, and oversight of all athletic programs in alignment with the school’s mission and Catholic values. This position ensures that athletics are an integral part of the student experience, promoting spiritual growth, academic excellence, sportsmanship, and physical well-being.

The Director will manage the daily operations of the athletic department, including supervising coaches, coordinating schedules, ensuring compliance with league and diocesan regulations, and fostering a Christ-centered culture in all athletic endeavors.

Job Responsibilities

Leadership & Mission Integration

  • Promote the Catholic identity and mission of the school through athletics.

  • Encourage coaches and student-athletes to model Christian values, sportsmanship, and respect on and off the field.

  • Collaborate with campus ministry and administration to integrate faith into the athletic experience.

Program Management

  • Oversee all athletic programs, including varsity, junior varsity, and middle school teams.

  • Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate coaching staff in alignment with school mission and professional standards.

  • Develop and manage the athletic department budget responsibly and transparently.

Operations & Compliance

  • Coordinate game and practice schedules, transportation, facilities, and officials.

  • Ensure compliance with league, diocesan, and state athletic association rules (e.g., NFHS, state interscholastic federation).

  • Maintain accurate records of team rosters, eligibility, physicals, and insurance.

Student-Athlete Support

  • Support academic performance, character development, and the overall well-being of student-athletes.

  • Collaborate with faculty and counselors to monitor academic eligibility and provide student support when needed.

Community & Outreach

  • Foster a sense of school spirit and community through athletic events.

  • Lead fundraising efforts and develop partnerships with alumni, parents, and sponsors to support athletic initiatives.

  • Serve as the public representative of the athletic program at school and community events.

Job Requirements

  • Practicing Catholic with a commitment to the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church (preferred or required depending on school policy).

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Athletic Administration, Education, or related field preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in athletic leadership or coaching, preferably in a Catholic or faith-based school.

  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of interscholastic sports regulations and best practices.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
