Job Description

As a Senior Correctional Officer, you will be a shift lead worker primarily responsible for providing and maintaining institutional safety and security at the Adult Correction Facility (ACF). The ACF is for adult offenders committed by the courts to serve a maximum sentence of one year.

Location and hours:
This position is located at the Adult Correction Facility at 1145 Shenandoah Lane, Plymouth, MN 55447. There is no public transportation to this facility. Candidates must be available to work various shifts which include day, evening, overnight, holiday, and weekend hours. This position is subject to 12-hour shifts. Anyone indicating limited availability will not be considered.

A shift differential of $1.00 per hour for nights and weekends is paid, meals are provided, and a uniform allowance is given for qualifying positions.

This is a full-time benefit earning position. You must be a  current regular or probationary employee   of the DOCCR to apply for this position. Limited duration employees not eligible.

In this position, you will:
  • Assign daily schedule and coordinate work activities of correctional officers including:
    • Assign and supervise resident work crews and authorizing or issuing supplies.
    • Instructing officers and supervising residents in the safe and proper operation of equipment.
    • Defining and maintaining institutional cleaning and sanitation schedules.
    • Serve as the senior officer in charge of the institution on evening or overnight shifts.
  • Enforce Minnesota laws and the DOCCR's rules (Chapter 2911) relating to the confinement of prisoners, security regulations, rules of conduct, and work rules.
  • Understand, support, and promote DOCCR's vision and mission to implement evidence-based practices within the organization (i.e., cognitive skills, motivational interviewing, and reducing recidivism).
  • Coordinate intake, discharge and transfer of residents, pursue residents attempting escape, transport residents to appointments using county vehicles, search visitors, and classify residents for outside status, work/study release, and home monitoring.
  • Respond to safety and security incidents and other emergency situations, break up fights, physically restrain, control resisting and uncooperative residents, respond to medical emergencies, perform emergency first aid, operate emergency equipment, and report to medical staff.
  • Write and maintain residents' disciplinary, incident, financial, and personal property reports and records; participate in administrative and disciplinary hearings; answer inquiries concerning resident status, provide directions, safety and security instructions, and program-related information to residents, employers, other agencies, and the public.
Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Three years or more of full-time equivalent work experience as a correctional officer or juvenile correctional officer.
    • Two years or more of full-time equivalent college or vocational/technical coursework in the fields listed below and one year or more of experience as a correctional officer or juvenile correctional officer.
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in corrections, law enforcement, or related criminal justice or behavioral/social science field.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County Driver's Permit .

  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and/or developing others, and assigning, reviewing, and training others in varied work activities.
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret and enforce data privacy and institutional, safety, and security rules and regulations.
  • Ability to:
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with residents, staff, management, agencies, and the public.
    • Run, climb stairs, and quickly respond to medical, safety and security, and other emergency situations; lift and carry supplies and equipment.
    • Physically restrain, lift, carry, and control intractable or injured residents.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
