This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
Under the general direction of the District Director/Chief Deputy District Director, the Deputy District Director is responsible for the management, policy development, direction, and coordination of the operations for the Traffic Operations Division. These functions include Traffic Management, System Design, Corridor Management, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Development and Encroachment Permits. The incumbent is responsible or all aspects of traffic safety and Transportation Systems Operations and Management (TSMO) of the State Highway System, and the planning and management of the Department’s highway traffic system development and operations within the nine San Francisco Bay Area counties.

The Statement of Qualifications must address the applicant’s qualifications relative to the following:
1. Equity has a heightened strategic focus across Caltrans Programs with efforts aligned to support all highway users without limits. Please provide examples of your previous work experience that demonstrate your ability to work collaboratively to deliver transportation services more equitably in our communities.
2. Highway fatalities and traffic congestion have been on the rise in the past few years. Please provide examples of your previous work experience that demonstrate your ability to effectively contribute to transportation safety and system management operations.
3. Delivering transportation safety and operational improvement projects in the Bay Area are challenging due to continued growth and increasing costs. Please provide examples of your previous work experience that demonstrate your ability to develop and foster key partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to enhance safety and operational performance of highways.
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
• Academic course work at the university level. Training and experience in the area of supervision and management principles.
• Ability to reason logically and creatively.
• Ability to develop and maintain a level of professional integrity to ensure that the best interests of Caltrans and the program are served.
• Ability to work well with partners and clients.
